Categorizing Wire Mesh Based On Material Used

A wire mesh is popularly used as a barrier that is made by forming and connecting strands of metal or any other materials. The product looks like a net or a spider’s web with the interwoven wires in it. It can be manufactured in different ways such as a welded wire mesh or a perforated one. Depending on the particular type of material used, wire mesh can be categorized in various types. These include metal wire mesh, fiberglass mesh, and plastic mesh.

A welded wire mesh is most likely a metal mesh that is made using different metals such as steel, aluminum, copper, brass, and so on. Every metal used produces a unique wire mesh product with varied physical and chemical properties. The other classification of mesh is made from fiberglass thread which features a clean, crisscross pattern. This type is commonly found in filtration components and adhesive tapes. Lastly, plastic mesh is usually made using various plastics like PVC, nylon, and polyethylene.

Our interest here is on mesh that is made from metals. This product can be woven, expanded, knitted, electroformed, welded, and photo chemically etched. Welded wire mesh, in particular, is produced using different materials like copper, stainless steel, carbon, and brass.

Copper mesh is very common in residential applications because of its artistic element while offering great durability and high electrical conductivity. Carbon steel wire mesh, on the other hand, is also very strong and flexible but is more affordable. However, it needs to be coated with PVC or galvanized steel to prevent it from getting corroded easily. Just like copper, brass wire mesh also offers a fantastic option for artistic uses. It is soft and malleable but has high tensile strength for industrial applications, too. Lastly, aluminum mesh offers the greatest benefit of being lightweight and excellent corrosion resistance. Hence, it is the top option for industries like automotive and aerospace.
