Everything That You Must Know About Polyethylene Foam

While you most likely have heard about other types of foam like polyurethane and polystyrene, you should also know about polyethylene foam or PE foam. More so if you are in the packaging industry or need foam materials for your products. Unlike those other foams, PE foam is widely used for many applications, residential, commercial, and industrial. It is actually more common than you realize yet very unique.

It is its cellular structure that makes PE foam so unique. It has a closed-cell structure that enables it to have millions of tiny bubbles that are strongly bonded to each other. However, they are also sealed apart individually, and thus, they are very durable and highly resistant to water. It also has antimicrobial abilities that prevent the undesirable growth of moulds and bacteria.

When it comes to flexibility and resiliency, polyethylene foam has both in high amounts. But still, it can be compressed and stretched into different shapes and sizes and return to its original form. It is because of its high resiliency and flexibility that it provides a sufficient barrier to avoid damages to the items it protects. This makes PE foam very valuable for fragile products that have to be shipped. It fully absorbs shock and vibration caused by transportation.

Best of all, polyethylene foam can be manufactured to meet certain density requirements. A high-density PE foam has much smaller cells but with thicker walls, while its low-density counterpart has thicker cells but thinner walls. Depending on your specific application requirements, you can opt for the density that matches it. Either way, the final characteristics of the foam can be altered as to how it is manufactured. Plus, it can also be made in various shapes to fit your particular products or any items you want protection with the foam.
